EA VP Claims Battlefield Will Not Become A Yearly Franchise

EA has claimed that the release of Battlefield Hardline this year doesn’t necessarily mean that Battlefield is becoming a yearly franchise, despite two games cropping up in space of just 12 months.
EA’s executive vice president Patrick Söderlund  made it clear that the work Dead Space developer Visceral Games was doing on Battlefield Hardline was as a result of giving the studio free reign to make what they want, rather than annualising the series…
Söderlund claimed that Visceral are extremely passionate about the Battlefield franchise and wanted to give a spin-off a shot, saying that Karl Magnus Troedsson and Steve Papoutsis, heads of DICE and Visceral respectively, came to him with the concept nearly three years ago.
While Battlefield Hardline is only seeing the light of day this year, the concept has been floating around DICE since 2000, when a working prototype dubbed Urban Combat was made.
While its release falls just a year after the launch ofBattlefield 4, Söderlund claims that EA has no intention of making Battlefield an annual franchise, saying the EA he is trying to shape “isn't an EA that needs to annualize everything."
