When a baseball cap is more interesting than the person underneath it then something is clearly wrong, and Ubisoft has sat up and taken notice.
Watch Dogs’ Aiden Pearce hasn’t exactly been a rapturously received protagonist, and Ubisoft is now looking at producing a more diverse range of characters for the inevitable Watch Dogs 2, opening up the possibility that Aiden won’t be making a return for the sequel…
Watch Dogs has been the most successful new videogame IP launch of all time, smashing records and becoming Ubisoft’s faster selling game ever. Despite shifting 4 million units in its first week though, a lot of criticism has been directed at Aiden Pierce.
Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot said in a recent interview that he “knew it would be polarising; some people loved the characters and some didn’t. It was difficult to please everybody with that character.”
Now that Watch Dogs is out of the door though, Guillemot claims that the team know what needs to be done in terms of characterisation in terms of the sequel, even if that means changing the main character entirely.
Ubisoft came under heavy fire recently for not having diverse characters in its games, garnering some serious negative publicity when a developer claimed it would be too costly to add a female assassin to Assassin’s Creed Unity.
